Fish Ladder at Woodruff Road

At the corner of Woodruff Road and the Sooke Highway #14, just below the culvert, a small dam had been built across the stream.  This had apparently been constructed many years before to supply water to a home just downstream.  While fish could probably jump this structure, at almost 1 metre in height it would have been difficult during high water levels, and impossible when the water level was lower.

Rather than remove the dam, which was now creating a large pool above it, the best solution was to build a fish ladder incorporating the dam as the last jump.  This was completed in the summer of 1994.  To date, we have seen increased numbers of spawning trout above this area indicating that more fish are able to move through here.
